Do you believe in magic?
If I had a pound for every time someone has asked me this question… well I would have about a hundred pound, but anyway here is my opinion on the subject. Feel free to comment below with your opinions on the subject, or if you think there is anything I have missed..
So lets first look at the definition of ‘magic’ from the oxford dictionary.
magic
Line breaks: magic
Pronunciation: /ˈmadʒɪk
noun
[mass noun] 1The power of apparently influencing events by using mysterious or supernatural forces:suddenly, as if by magic, the doors start to open.
Magic or sorcery is an attempt to understand, experience and influence the world using rituals, symbols, actions, gestures and language
So the first question is do I believe in supernatural forces, would be a better question. Then, if I do I believe that people have the power to influence, posses or use them.
I did a survey on males and females aged 13 to 70. In this survey I asked four questions.
Do you believe in magic? Do you know what the definition of magic is? Do you believe in supernatural powers? and Do you believe that people have the power to use, posses and influence supernatural powers – if they were real?
My findings were as follows:
Out of the 25 people asked, only 6 said they believe in magic, two if them being in between 13 and 18. All 6 being female.
Out of the 25 asked, 20 said they know what the definition of magic is. These were both males and females.
Out of the 25 asked, a shocking 21 people said they do believe in supernatural powers. The 4 who didn’t, one was female and three were male, all aged 18+
Out of the 25 asked 19 said they do believe that people have the power to use, posses and influence supernatural powers.
On asking what they thought the definition of magic is, the majority believes it means being able to move th9ngs with your hands and control mythical creatures, This is of course, not true, completely.
So what is certain is that a lot of people believe in supernatural powers, but not magic. Which is surprising.
After this I had an online conversation with a pagan witch.
She answered all of my questions, and was very informative. She wishes to remain anonymous.
Here are the questions I asked her:
If magic is real, then why doesn’t everyone use it? Everyone has the ability too. It takes a lot of practice, and self meditation.
What is magic? Influencing the elements, I would say anyway. But we all do magic without realizing, when you wish for something, cross your fingers, pray for something, if you want something to come true, and it does, then it means you wanted it bad enough.
How long have you been doing this for? Just over five years.
Ok, well it was a pleasure talking to you.
So there we go, I am going to keep my fingers crossed to win the lottery ( you never know ). But even after doing a lot of research I am still a bit sceptical, so I delved deeper.
There are so many types of magic, grey magic, left hand and right hand magic, black magic and the list can go on and on.
The biggest thing I have got from all of the research is do I believe someone can moved things with their mind, shoot fire from their hands? No, sorry. I do believe, however, that if you put enough faith into something, it can come true. So I guess making a wish, dreaming about something, it can help, possibly. I guess Disney was right.
